South Shore Cottage is fabulous, but not for the faint-hearted. It is the most remote of Shona's nine cottages. The island boat will transport you for 20 minutes across Loch Moidart and around the island to South Shore. The cottage does not have a slipway, so be prepared to jump on to the rocky shore. Wellies are advisable (no great problem for the reasonably agile). Once ashore, a steep path, which is muddy in wet weather, leads up to the South Shore Cottage. Please bear in mind you will have to carry your provisions and luggage up the hill so it is wise to pack lightly. If that sounds a bit daunting, any inconvenience will be quickly forgotten when you arrive at the cottage itself. Standing high and alone on the hillside, facing west, you will be treated to astonishing views across the channel to the surrounding islands and away to the Atlantic beyond.

The cottage has been completely renovated and features a cosy sitting room with stove, a newly upgraded kitchen, a beautiful bedroom with king size bed and a spacious bathroom.

It has no electricity (you will dine out on this place for months to come!), meals are prepared on a gas cooker and the cottage is lit by gas lamps — tuition will be given on arrival as to how to manage them. Heating and hot water is run from the stove, water comes from a private spring (the fresh peaty water is filtered and safe to drink).

Arrival time is 11:00am and departure time is 9:00am.

Dogs are welcome with a supplementary charge of £50 per pet

Useful information

South Shore Cottage arrival time is 11:00am and departure time is 9:00am.

  • The cottage season opens at the end of March and closes at the end of October.
  • Some cottages are available outside the season and for Christmas and New Year. Longer lets are also available in certain cottages.
  • Dogs are welcome (limit of 2) with a cleaning supplement in all cottages, with the exception of the Sail Loft. In the summer months, there are ticks in the long grass and we recommend you give your dog tick treatment before arrival.
  • A RIB is used to transport you to the island on arrival and departure days. A quad and trailer will transport your luggage to your cottage then again on departure (South Shore only by boat).
  • If guests would like to leave the island for any reason, journeys can be easily arranged but are subject to a charge of £50 each way.
  • We provide towels, bed linen, oven gloves, tea towels, salt and pepper, tin foil and cling film. We also provide you with essential amenities such as a starter pack of toilet roll, kindling, firelighters and matches. If you run out of any amenities, you can purchase extras from the Island Shop.
  • The Island Shop stocks a range of supplies - please refer to the list provided on booking to know what to bring, such as fruit and vegetables, to supplement our offerings.
  • For guests who would like to stay connected, there is Wi-Fi access in the village hall and mobile coverage is rarely more than 100 meters away.
  • All cottages are non-smoking.

Guardianship

Respect for the environment is our core principle in how we manage and run the island. We make every effort to be plastic-free and carbon neutral on the island with no cars and plentiful wood supply. All our electricity comes from the local hydro-electric power station. Our water supply comes from the hills. We are meticulous with our recycling and use only bio-cleaning products. We understand our role in the guardianship of the island and our mission is to protect this vital environment for future generations.
